Thanks to The Help

I identify as a minority in many ways. I am a woman. I am a French Canadian. I am a Mormon. But there is one prejudice that being myself, I will never truly or fully understand; being a woman of colour.

I just finished reading The Help by Kathryn Stockett. I must express how deeply moving this novel was. I know from reading the acknowledgements that this book, the characters and the stories it holds are wholly fictitious. However, the lives that are depicted in this novel was at one time reality. There were many women whose lives were very similar to those portrayed in this novel and I cannot stop myself from marvelling at their tolerance, strength and patience.

When reading the novel, I couldn't help but feel ashamed of the colour of my skin. Knowing that people can associate me to this shallow, unintelligent group left me grieving. Knowing that people could take one look at me and assume that I would treat them harshly. I realized at that moment that I would only ever understand a fraction of what it was like to be a coloured woman in the 1960s. I would only understand a smaller fraction of what it is like to be a coloured woman today. I know that there are still people out there who truly believe that white people are above all others. This is not the case. We are all created equal.

I know that this all seems extremely insincere coming from someone who has never been sneered at or had a slur thrown in my direction... But I will never be the one to smirk or give the disapproving look.

While we cannot change what people think of us, we can change what people see in us. We can be better, kinder, compassionate and loving. One of my favourite parts of the book, Aibileen is trying to teach the little white girl she looks after a lesson on being a good person. She wraps two candies. One in a white wrapper, one in a brown wrapper. She explains to the little girl that regardless of what is on the outside, the inside can still be good.

How simple life is when seen through the eyes of a child.

While I cannot change the past, there is so much I want to change about our future. Please read this book and when you go to speak ill or judge another person, stop it. Just stop.

96. Get a mani/pedi

Completed: July 8, 2011

After an eventful Thursday home, Friday was meant to be a little more chill. I went out with my friends, Ali and Andre, for McDonald's and a late afternoon show at Cineplex. We saw Horrible Bosses which actually wasn't even close to horrible. It was actually really funny. Definitely worth seeing if you're looking for a funny movie! Jamie Foxx plays a small, but hilarious role in it. It totally just slayed me. "You think I know how to kill a man because I'm black?!" Not a word for word quote, but still hilarious.

Elise had texted me that day asking me if I wanted to get a mani/pedi. With the list in mind, I graciously accepted. I was honestly so pumped to get pampered the day before Edgefest. She then told me about this nail polish called Shellac. Basically, the nail polish is painted on but will only dry under UV light. Then it stays on for 14 days with out chipping or scratching. I was so excited because I love doing my nails but since I've started lifeguarding again, I haven't been able to do them. Why? Because the chlorine at my pool disintegrates top coats. (I know, intense. My hair goes in that water.)

Once we got there, we went over to the side of the "salon" where they have all of the nail polish on a shelf and you can pick which colour you want. Now the reason I put "salon" is because it was really one of those majorly sketchy salons in the sketchiest part of my home town. Sometimes the ladies doing my nails would ask me a question about my nails, and I had no idea what they were saying. I would just look at my sister and give a face that said, "HELP ME!"

When Elise and I had picked out our colours, we handed them to the ladies doing our toes. Then we realized that we had picked the exact same colour! Without even realizing it! Looking at them, you really could not tell them apart, we even got the same design on them. The only difference was that Elise's was a smidge darker than mine. But aside from that, they were exactly the same.

Then off I went to get Shellac, it was really cool. I'm not gonna lie! I hit my nail on the UV light though when I went to place it in the little spot for your hand. This is why my mom gets all mad at me when I say "Mom, I can't. I'm doing my nails." Because it actually takes me ages to do my nails and not mess them up. The Shellac polish was actually fantastic for a lifeguard! It lasted only 5 days, but considering how often I got in and out of the water made it extremely impressive. And I kind of forced it off too... WOOPS!

Elise ended up getting fake nails, which was not her intention. But she got them, and when I asked her she said that she really liked them. Fake nails are not usually something we Bee girls are into. Why? Because not being able to pick up spare change is annoying and when you try to get an itch with fake nails, for some reason it's never fully satisfying. And they hurt when they get knocked off!

After we got home, we did a facial and watched a movie. It was a perfect night hanging out with my sister. I miss her so much living away from home. We had just got to this nice spot in our relationship where we actually like to hang out and get along like 98% of the time. It's been a nice change!

Love you, Elise!

HOW CUTE ARE WE?! Awww.
